Note from Pastor Rick (8/24/2016)

mitchell01What a wonderful time we had in the park on Sunday. Thanks to everyone who worked to make the joint service and potluck a joyful experience. Chip worked overtime setting up, breaking down and ushering. Jan pulled together a good combined choir and played all the hymns. The Tongan Dancers, the drama (which included Pastor Gregory) and the powerful preaching were highlights of the day. Then there was a lot fabulous food and fellowship around the tables. Truly, we came together in “Unity with Purpose.” Continue reading Note from Pastor Rick (8/24/2016)

Note from Pastor Rick (8/10/2016)

Thanks to Pastor Gregory for his excellent sermon explaining the “Rapture” to us and to Anthia Lee Halfmann and their beautiful music Sunday. We had a good group at Lunch Bunch, concluding with a birthday celebration for Dona Smith-Powers’s friend, Larry, complete with chocolate cake and strawberries and whipped cream. After Nana’s ample Patio Hour, we all went home “well-fed” in every way.

This Sunday we will continue our consideration of “Coming Home,” this time focusing on Jesus’ parable at the very end of the “Sermon on the Mount” in which he encourages his followers to “build their homes on solid rock.” Again we will ask what is meant by home and how we might construct such a “home” for ourselves and our congregation. We have a fine building but is that enough? Is it even what Jesus is looking toward we he exhorts the work crew? Continue reading Note from Pastor Rick (8/10/2016)

Joint Worship Service- August 21

Sunday, August 21, 10:30 AM will be our Annual Joint Service in Mitchell Park with Covenant Presbyterian and University AME Zion.  This year we also welcome First Presbyterian, iChurch and the Tongan Methodist Fellowship that meets at University AME Zion to the celebration.  Worship for the whole family will be followed by a potluck lunch, also in the park.  Bring food to share and invite someone to share the day with you. If you can help with setup (9:00 AM) or clean-up afterwards, that would be great. There will be a joint choir that will rehearse at 9:30 AM.

Joint service and away time

jointservice-01This Sunday we will hold our annual service and potluck in Mitchell Park. This is always a highlight of the summer. There are 6 congregations participating this year – ours, Covenant Presbyterian, iChurch Korean Presbyterian, Tongan Methodist Fellowship, University AME Zion, and First Presbyterian. The theme is “Unity and Diversity.” The service will include music, dance, and drama, along with more traditional liturgy. There is guaranteed to be something for everyone! Melanie Ramirez will represent us in worship leading. There will be a joint choir (gather in the Covenant sanctuary at 9:30 AM for rehearsal.) Bring food to share. Come at 9:00 AM to help with set-up or stay afterward to help with clean-up. Please plan to attend and bring a friend. You won’t be disappointed.

It has been fun to meet with colleagues to plan this service. I regret I won’t be there to share the experience. I will be in Seattle this weekend for the memorial service for my dear friend, Elizabeth Patrick, who died earlier in the summer. We were friends for over 25 years and she was important support for me on many occasions. While in Seattle, I will also worship with the congregation of First Baptist Church, where I did my seminary internship. It also happens that the annual “clergy cruise” on Puget Sound, sponsored by the Seattle Baptist Union, will be Tuesday evening so I will be able to participate in that as well. I will be back in the office on Thursday. Call the church office if there is a pastoral emergency. I pray we all have a good week ahead – healing, nourishing, blessed and blessing.

May we continue to grow together as God’s people.

Pastor Rick
