CROP Walk, October 2, 1016

Sunday, October 2nd at 1 PM
at Burgess Park along Burgess Drive, Menlo Park

CROP Walk team

We will again have education, music, and food to help nourish our bodies and minds at the event.

Thanks to all who came and those who supported them, we raised over $22,000 last year, up from $13,000 in 2014. Seventy-five percent of the money went to Church World Service or to relief agencies of your choice, and 25 % went to two local hunger fighting agencies. CWS accomplishes a lot with this money. For example, women in Kenya learn how to build their own sand dam so they don’t have to go so far to get water, disadvantaged minorities in Paraguay and Bolivia learn to grow kitchen gardens as small businesses, and gypsy children in Serbia finally get access to schooling.

To catch a glimpse of the impact you are making, check out CWS’s key projects in 2015-2016 on the NGO Aid Map:

I hope more of us from FBC can join in this walk.  It is a fun way to make an impact on fighting hunger, both locally and abroad.

July Mission Offering Update: One Great Hour of Sharing

One Great Hour of SharingThe special offering for July is our annual offering for One Great Hour of Sharing.

Our theme for the 2015 One Great Hour of Sharing is “Give and Change the World”.

This is our annual opportunity to help others, both in the world and at home, who are in desperate need due to natural or political disasters. We can have an impact to “change to life of someone in distress in {our} own congregation or community, and at other times… in the lives of those we may never meet but who are in desperate need of our compassion and generosity. For almost seven decades we have been making a difference together – and glorifying God – through this offering which funds relief, development, and refugee ministry all over the world and in the U.S.

Our gifts to One Great Hour Sharing make a difference in the world. To date we have received $865 toward our goal of $800.

In a second letter, Paul writes to the Corinthians, who were excited about ministry opportunities.

For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has – not according to what one does not have. I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a question of a fair balance between your present abundance and their need, so that their abundance may be for your need, in order that there may be a fair balance. As it is written, ‘The one who had much did not have too much, and the one who had little did not have too little.’  – 2 Corinthians 8: 12-15

This is our annual opportunity to help others, both in the world and at home, who are in desperate need due to natural or political disasters. This spring we gave $630 to OGHS in response to the devastating earthquake in Nepal. Those funds have already been sent so that they can be put to use right away. Our goal for the year is $800. During
worship in July you will have to opportunity to learn about just a few of the many ways that our giving helps those in need. As expressed in the materials from American Baptist Churches, USA, “together, we will achieve a fair balance, bringing about a world the way God intended it to be. Give and change the world.”

Nepal Earthquake Relief

Nepal earthquake reliefChurches in the U.S. and Puerto Rico are asked to keep the Nepali families, emergency response workers and government in prayer. Additional financial relief is urgently needed. You may give through our church, making your check to the church and designating your gift for “*OGHS-Nepal Earthquake Relief.”
