On June 18, the Board of General Ministries of ABCUSA recognized the Kachin Baptist Churches USA as an Associated Ministry Organization of ABCUSA when representatives of these churches now settled in the USA entered into this covenant ministry.  “Kachin congregations are making a wonderful contribution to ABC life,” according to Dr. Susan Gillies, the new Interim General Secretary, ABCUSA. Representatives of Kachin churches at this meeting affirmed this decision through this partnership affirmation.

The ABC President Judy Fackenthal said, “It is an honor to receive these brothers and sisters in Christ into the American Baptist family. They strongly feel the connection to us through the historic ministry of our missionaries. I pray God leads us into many shared opportunities as together we continue to serve as the hands and feet of Christ.”

Dr. Nick Carter, who formerly served as President of Andover Newton Theological School in Boston, Massachusetts, is now the interim President of the American Baptist Seminary of the West, Berkeley, following the untimely death of Dr. Paul Martin on March 23. Dr. Carter had retired only two years ago, but has accepted the challenging responsibility to carry on the mission of ABSW. Just recently, ABSW had its 140th commencement and presented an honorary doctorate to Reverend Dr. Margaret Cowden who gave the commencement address. Degrees were presented to MCL, MDiv, and DMin students, and certificates to the first graduates in ABSW’s new Latino program, Iniciativa Latina.
